Scanbot – Document Scanning and Management On Steroids

in Productivity

ScanbotI spend a lot of time surfing the net looking at new apps and services. I have made some appalling discoveries and some, like Todoist, that have been life changing in the way they have enhanced my personal and business activities.

Every now and again, however, one slips under the radar.  By pure chance, I was passing time in the bar of a hotel enjoying a libation or two and counter-acting the healthy activities of my wife who was having some almighty number of lotions and unguents massaged into her, when I came across a video on YouTube by Carl Pullein which I include at the bottom of this review.

Carl’s topic in this video was Scanbot, a mobile scanning service that intrigued me for the following reasons.

Great Decision

Everyone has, at some time, experimented with apps that scanned business cards, bar codes, QR codes, documents etc. In the past, most have been stand-alone and the quality of the app has varied from okay to downright dreadful. Carl’s explanation of Scanbot sounded more than a tad interesting, so I downloaded it, experimented with scanning menus, beer mats, wine lists, the crossword puzzle in the paper I was reading and within half an hour I had purchased the pro version,  It was a great decision.

The basic version does a pretty good job with barcodes, QR codes, all manner of paper-based media, works with multi-page media, has the ability to save a scan as a PDF or a JPG and upload the scans to your preferred cloud service. These include:

  • Box
  • Dropbox
  • Evernote / Evernote Business
  • Google Drive
  • OneDrive (former SkyDrive)
  • Shoeboxed
  • Telekom Cloud
  • Todoist
  • WebDAV
  • Yandex.Disk

Turbocharged Scanbot

scanbot annotationCough up the cash for the pro service and you get a bucket load of seriously turbocharged extras. These start off with OCR which also provides the capability for quick text search within scans. Quick actions allow you to directly on information contained in your scans. You can call a number, open a URL or navigate to a place.

With other pro modules, you can rename scans quickly with predefined placeholders of your location, calendar entries, date and time or custom placeholders and choose a name template for your scans, e.g. the date and time or even location-based names.

For me, the technology within Scanbot that made me buy the pro version was the ability to identify a document, undertake perspective correction and then take the scan itself, no getting shaky scans as you go one-handed to press the screen to shoot.

Scanbot is available for both Android and IoS
